Detroit Police Finally Admit what Gun Owners Have Always Known: The Police Can’t Protect You

In a move that is disheartening, the Detroit Police Department has officially given up maintaining the façade that police are able to adequately protect citizens. As fans came to Comerica Park to watch the Tigers beat the A’s on Saturday, they were greeted by 400 police officers, handing out fliers that cautioned people from entering Detroit. The headline of the flier read: “Attention: Enter Detroit at your Own Risk.”

Finally, the police are admitting what gun owners have known for years- police cannot protect the people from violence. Such a responsibility rests with each of us.

Don’t get me wrong, I never wanted it this way. In a perfect world, people would leave one another alone, and we would all live happily together. However, I’ll settle for the police being able to adequately protect its citizens- but even that is a fairy tale fantasy. Despite the best efforts of brave police officers, the fact is that though there is the rare coincidence where a police officer is in the right place at the right time to stop violent crime, the bulk of police officers’ duties as related to violent crime are catching the perpetrator, not pre-empting the violence. My solution has long been for the citizenry to arm themselves.

The flier serves as an alert to the public concerning the working conditions of the Detroit Police Department and explains that though Detroit is dangerous, it is particularly dangerous with the strained police resources.

“Detroit is America’s most violent city, its homicide rate is the highest in the country, and yet, the Detroit Police Department is grossly understaffed,” Detroit Police Department Association attorney Donato Lorio stated. “The DPOA believes that there is a war in Detroit, but there should be a war on crime, not a war on its officers.”

Chiefly among the complaints from the department are the 12-hour shifts and the pay decreases they have suffered from a city that is dying in every way.

I will never claim that a police officer’s job is easy. And in the crime-riddled wasteland of Detroit in the wake of the auto industry downturn, it can only be a hellish experience. However, such complaints are incredibly common in the public sector when an area experiences a significant downturn. With decreased revenue and industry, Detroit is struggling. I can certainly empathize with the officers’ tough situation, but across the country, public sector employees are shouting their outrage at suffering budget cuts. What they neglect to realize, however, is that everyone is going through hard times- especially the private sector. It’s tough to side with the officers’ union when half of Detroit is boarded up shop windows and foreclosed homes.

I do, however, appreciate the officers’ candor with regards to safety. I am a realist, and I cannot honestly expect that a police officer will always be around when needed. They can catch the criminal after I’m dead, but that would be of little consolation to me. That is precisely why I carry a firearm and I encourage all responsible people to do similarly.

The sooner America reconciles itself with the fact that police protection is a well-intentioned illusion, the quicker we can address our independent protection needs in a meaningful fashion. That is exactly why concealed weapon laws are so important.

I urge all citizens who value personal liberty and self-protection to support Senate Bill 2188, the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2012.” This act proposes a reciprocity and recognition of all states licenses that offer concealed weapons licenses to its citizens. Much like how a driver’s license from Tennessee allows someone to drive in Colorado, a person would be able to carry in their home state as well as travel through another. We need uniformity in the law, and we need to urge our senators to stand with us and allow us to protect ourselves.

Haven’t been to Detroit in a number of years; I am a Michigan native. I have heard that even when violent criminals are caught in Wayne County no jury will convict them anyway. I don’t know if that is true though.

  3. Frank says:

The LEO’s job is to keep the peace , not offer protective services anyway. For some silly reason, criminals never seem to make a play when a LEO is standing nearby.
Anyway, the law-abiding citizens should be armed and not restricted in their right to a safe life. Kennesaw, Ga. has a law the everybody should be armed. And take note of how rapes declined in Orlando Fla. when all the ladies took firearms training and started carrying.

  4. KLL says:

I don’t think that this should be included in the city’s vacation pamphlet!

  5. joseph r carreiro sr says:

After what the Muslims did to the Christians in Michigan recently (American Muslims) it is almost as bad as going into Mexico as far as possible death is concerned. Then the police were blaming the Christians. Now they are in court (the police that is defending their stance. What is really going on in our Country? It does not look kosher, meaning right.Think.

  6. William R. McFadden says:

What did the Muslims do to the Christians in Michigan recently????

    • Ray Morgan says:

Go to the web and put look for yourself and not only in Deerborn Mich. but outside the USA. Anywhere the brotherhood is in gov. those who dont convert dont do so well. Totally do not stand behind the movement of individuals to insight this kind of reaction but absolutally do not stand for bricks, sticks and the beating or killing of individuals that dont agree or insult their prophet or allah!

      go check it out!

    • Dems-4-fairness says:

My family is 1/3 Muslim. Trust me when I say this, you either convert to Islam or you will be killed if you try to speak freely about your religion. They have zero tollerance for freedom of speech laws or freedom of religion laws. In Dearborn Mich. the police are on the side of the Muslims. The reason is that Dearborn is largely populated by Muslims and the police there know “where their bread is buttered” if you catch my meaning. Detroit is no different. For over 50 years it has been controlled by the Liberal union thugs that have run the city into the ground for the benefit of those that can afford to pay off the government officials like Kilpatrick, ex-mayor, current-criminal. Recently the police chief in Detroit had to resign over a scandal so huge I doubt we will ever know all the details, as the city coverups continue to plague a city where the people vote for the politician promissing them everything their greedy hearts desire. “Raise taxes on the rich and give it to the poor”, only most all the rich already left Detroit and every poor person is taxed at the same rate as the rich. You can buy a home for under $5000 in Detroit so your children can live next to drug dealers. Where laws on immigrantion, right to bear arms, rights to speech about God are all denied by the liberal progressive army of lawyers and politicians. A real paridise.

  7. James says:

It is a fact that the police in every city carry guns to protect themselves… not to protect you.

  8. BENNY SMITH says:

You have a black mayor a black muslim pres. You have the best of both worlds. Can’t you get money from Obama? He’s giving the muslim brotherhood 350 million. And you will vote for the MF anyway. Good luck Detroit.

  9. Derrick Bernabei says:

Having all private citizens carry a firearm is a well intentioned illusion of safety as well. Ultimately society, throughout history, needs a group of people-in this case police-that will run and shoot towards the crime. Private citizens, for the most part, are in it for themselves and not the collective…therefore they will be running and shooting away from the crime. If you have a counter-arguement to this maybe you should advocate every one carrying a bucket of water and a fire house everywhere they go in addition to a firearm.

    • Dems-4-fairness says:

So your argument is that the police will do the right thing, while all private citizens are cowards that are only interested in looking out for themselves? I do not know what country you live in, but this is America, home of the brave! You have no idea what you are talking about.

  10. M. Patricia Starr says:

I was born & raised in Detroit which was a great city to grow up in & I’m appalled to see what has become of it! Makes me want to cry. However, guns were one of the biggest catalysts for the collapse of our society. Those who live by th sword, die by the sword.

    • Dems-4-fairness says:

FYI: When Jesus said, live by and die by the sword, he has talking specifically about criminals that earn their living by using swords – “live by the sword”. Also, Jeses was referring to Proverbs 12:18 which says “recklass words pierce like a sword” when he said to his disciples “I did not come to bring peice, but a sword” in Matthew 10:34. Later, the Apostle Paul writes to the Ephesians 6:17 that “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Then even later, the apostle John writes in the book of Revelation 19:16-21, the rider on the white horse is revealed as the “King of Kings and Lord or Lords” and “the rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse”. So we see that the true “sword” is of the “Holy Spirit” which is the “Word of God” and by that “sword” we should “live and die” according to Jesus Christ. Other gods may want you to live and die by swords other than the Words of God, like the lies told by our enemy Satan.

    • mrsgunnut10 says:

Patricia – Guns may be “ONE” of the biggest catalysts for the collapse of our Society but there are others just as damgerous, like NOT trying to protect yourself. There are a lot more people alive than dead just because they “DID” own a weapon like a gun, ball bat, knife, broom handle, screwdriver, hammer,or even knitting needles. I am Retired Military and have lived in many States and several Foreign Countries, some Countries where being armed was a neccessity, legal or not. Just my own opinion and I thank you for your time – Stay Safe. TSgt., USAF Retired.

    • John Golt says:

Those that live there lives like a Coward, will Die like a Coward! You can stand up like a Man, Live like a Man or stay under the Porch like the Low life Dog you live like!
Your life, your choosing! Choose well!

  11. GENE THORNE says:

CIVIL UNREST IS INEVATABLE. DETROIT IS SINFUL. CAN’T PEOPLE SEE THAT THE MOVEMENT OF ISLAM BROTHERHOOD IS ALIVE AND WELL RIGHT HERE IN AMERICA. HOW DID ROME FALL. SHE FELL FROM WITHIN. GET YOUR HEAD ON CAUCASIONS.

  12. Janice says:

With a very large Muslim Population Detroit is a hot bed and police have zero control. I saw an Islamic street festival where people who were carrying signs about christianity and not speaking at all were attacked by Muslim children as well as adults. The police stood by and did nothing as rocks and bottles were thrown at these people. Police told them to leave or they could not promise they would get out safely. Is this still a part of America or is this a Muslim Nation?? When did the police decide that people who are aggressive and attacking have more rights than people who are peacefully demonstrating? Obviously if the police can’t do their jobs effectively then they need to be removed. Perhaps Sheriff Joe Arpaio can bring some law back to Detroit…

    • William R. McFadden says:

      Half truths at best

      • Dems-4-fairness says:

Full truth, I saw the video on youtube. I will never bow to the demon moon god allah. That is why their mosques (churches) have a crescent moon on top, where the star represents his daughter(s). Jesus died for all people so we all could have freedom. Choose Jesus as your lord and savior and Praise God.

    • adam says:

It’s called Democracy. If you can’t handle it, don’t come to Metro Detroit. Especially if you come here looking for trouble. Because you WILL find it.

  13. Eddie says:

Let me take a wild guess. Detroit has had democrat mayors for the last 50 years. Right or wrong?

  14. mrsgunnut10 says:

So, What else is new. Most Gun Owners already know that the United States Supreme Court has ruled that Law Enforcment Agencies don’t have to protect each and every person. This has been known for years. It is well known that the Law Enforcement Agencies in all Cities, Counties, and States can’t provide you with indivual personal protection because of their shortage of Man Power. Think of how much territory your Local Officers have to cover. Now, divide the number of Officers you have into that figure to find the Area each these Officers must Patrol. Sort of blows your mind, doesn’t it ?? Now, WHO is going to protect you and your family, when the Law isn’t available??? The answer is relatively simple – You must be the protector of your own Family. Arm yourselves with whatever is available, even a sling shot with marbles will make the bad person yell with pain and run, maybe not run far, so hit that person again and again and again if necessary. Just my personal and humble opinion. Thank you for your time. TSgt., USAF Retired.

    • adam says:

Thank you for your service. By all means, do whatever you can to protect yourself and your family. I’m not allowed to have a gun because of my younger, crazier days but I support gun rights. Quite frankly, there is a sizable violent criminal element out there and they need to be kept in check. It’s common sense. Shoot to kill.
