Tom Coburn used to be one of the best Republicans we had in the Senate. Unfortunately, his reputation has started to slip since he voted for TARP and has spent an inordinate amount of time agitating for tax increases. Apparently the fact that most Republicans don’t agree with him must have stuck in his craw because he’s backing West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin for the Senate.
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) says he supports Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s re-election because he believes Manchin is not beholden to short-sighted political interests.
Coburn recently gave $250 to Manchin’s re-election campaign.
“I think he votes thinking about the long-term interests of the country. We don’t agree on everything but he’s a good guy,” Coburn told The Hill.
Supporting a Democrat over a Republican is a bright red line that no Republican senator should ever cross if he wants to continue to get conservative support. Coburn can talk all he wants about how Manchin is “thinking about the long-term interests of the country,” but that NEVER, EVER holds up when it matters. For example, Manchin, who claims to be a fiscally conservative, pro-life Democrat, supported Obamacare when it mattered and then later claimed that he had changed his mind. That’s the guy Tom Coburn wants in the Senate instead of a conservative Republican.
Coburn was reelected in 2010 and claims he’s not going to run again in 2016. It’s too bad he didn’t make that decision in 2010 because Coburn has already been in Washington for way, too long.

Unfortunately I must agree, Tom Coburn needs to hit the door and return to OK. And most of his fellow Senators need to follow him now. We need term limits immediately. Most elected officials are “retired on active duty”, as we used to say in the military. That’s how they get so confused on who they represent and the old buddy system they use to value each other. It is sickening that men like Coburn, who know the score still chose to put their “friends” ahead of our country. Send him home! We need to reduce government, and we can start with him.
Who cares who Coburn endorses. He was an undercover Democrat. We need fresh politicians not he ones who’ve been in politics their whole life ,they’re corrupt! ECONOMICS IS ÇOMMON SENSE
Tom is one of the most respected members of Congress. He is a long time defender of conservative values. If you tossed every member of Congress that voted for TARP, you pretty much would have given the boot to all of them. In hindsight, TARP was a bad idea, but in 2008 the country and financial system was in crisis and many respected people in the financial community were claiming the world would end without it. I think if Tom had itbto do over, he would vote against it. I have checked his voting record and he has been, and in my opionion, will coninue to be, a true conservative. I don’t agree with Tom’s support of Munchkin, but I respect his decision.
We have term limits now. Every six years for Tom Coburn. What we need is more a more informed voting public. Most voters just go into their polling place and vote for a name they recognize. We also need to lower (cap) how much money a candidate can raise for their election. I thought there was a limit on how much a single person or entity could contribute to a candidate. But apparently there is no limit on the total amount the candidate can raise. Also, no tax dollars should go to fund candidates.
I guess that’s not much worse than Coburn’s support of Republican Kevin Sean Roberts, state rep. for district 36 in Ok. He supported Roberts when he knew nothing about the character of the man! Not all Republicans are good guys either. Neither did he respond to my comments or inquiries concerning this support. I guess he’s just too busy.
Tom, like many of the career politicians has forgotten what it is like to get taxed more all the time. We simply should not support anyone in favor of higher taxes. Tax reform which lowers rates, broadens the base, or strictly a consumption tax is o.k.
To support a dem who voted for Obama care is wrong. TIme for Tom to go.
I am very disappointed to hear this. I have respected Tom Coburn and thought I could depend upon him to stand with the conservatives at all times. What a let down.
Was Tom Coburn bought? Money is the root of all evil. And that clearly shows in Washington DC. Yeah, Tom, thought you were on our side but clearly not, so pack your bags and go home, you are no longer needed.
Tom Colburn has fought for conservatism with great fervor and I would rather have him support Joe than John McRino. Voting for a person just because they are in u r party has led to the partisan mess we have now.
We need term limits if we are going to break the strangle hold of power in WA.
VOTE HIM OUT..HE DOES NOT BELONG IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE CAREER POLITICANS. TIME TO GO ….TOM….GOOD BY
