I will admit, when I began blogging, I never expected to have to discuss anything related to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. As I write their names, I feel sleazy, as if I work for some gossip rag. However, their names have crossed my path recently as Pitt’s mother, Jane Pitt, wrote a simple letter to her local newspaper, The Springfield News-Leader. But while I may, in passing, be forced to discuss the celebrities, I promise you, I will not be offering any lame contraction of Brad and Angelina’s names.
Jane’s letter was a simple one, urging Christians to vote for Mitt Romney over President Obama due to beliefs concerning gay marriage and abortion. It’s pretty standard fare for bible-belt America and, undoubtedly, similar to thousands of letters being printed in local newspapers across the country. This is not a story, in and of itself. The real story comes as this poor woman has been abused and brow-beaten into cowering from the oh-so-tolerant left that condemns her for… well, stating an opinion.
The entirety of the letter sent to the newspaper reads,
“I have given much thought to Richard Stoecker’s letter (“Vote for Mormon against beliefs,” June 15). I am also a Christian and differ with the Mormon religion.
But I think any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon.
Any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama — a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage.
I hope all Christians give their vote prayerful consideration because voting is a sacred privilege and a serious responsibility.”
Fine. The woman has beliefs, and she shared them in a local newspaper that welcomes letters from the community. People are free to agree or disagree with her sentiment, and there is no harm done. But Jane’s letter has outraged the left and they’re all but grabbing torches and pitchforks to show her the face of leftist “tolerance”.
The Hollywood Reporter, within days, attacked Jane Pitt and labeled her comments “anti-gay”, an apparently catch-all phrase for someone who does not support same-sex marriage. It is an important distinction to note that many people do not have a problem with homosexuals, but do not believe in same-sex marriage. But it’s easier to smear them as “anti-gay”, just as it is easier to smear those who disagree with Obama’s policies as “bigots”.
The New York Daily News went further and claimed that Brad Pitt’s mother unleashed an “anti-gay, anti-Obama fury in letter.” Fury? Come on…
Of course, Tweets, not subject to the laughable modicum of journalistic “integrity” as the aforementioned rags, have been even more unkind: (Note: foul language up ahead)
“Brad Pitt’s mom wrote an anti-gay pro-Romney editorial. Kill the bitch.”
“Brad Pitt’s mom, die,”
“Fuck you, brad pitt’s mom, the gay community made your kid a star, you whacko,”
“Brad Pitt’s mom is a dumb cunt.”
WND.com spoke briefly with Jane after the eruption of liberal hate, and the broken woman refused to comment about the uproar. While she was polite, she was fearful of retaliation and conveyed “fear and despair”. As WND reported, “Even her thank you, however, was said in a subdued manner laden with heaviness of heart.”
This is thoroughly unacceptable, but not altogether, surprising. The much referenced, but seldom-seen, liberal tolerance is well known to anyone on the right who has vocalized their opinions. While honest critiques are welcomed, outright threats and visceral vulgarities are not.
This outpouring of hatred from the left is even more ironic as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are outspoken liberals who are staunch champions of gay-issues and supporters of same-sex marriage. While others may feel free to disagree, I have not seen an outpouring of death threats and extreme vulgarities directed towards the far more vocal Hollywood couple. So why the double standard? Could it be that liberals are not actually seeking tolerance?
Don’t worry, though. According to Britain’s The Daily Mail, Jolie has asked Pitt to “educate” his mother and “teach his mother not to be so outspoken about same-sex marriage, especially since the celebrity couple clearly support it.” What is happening to this world where children are taking up the cause of “re-education” to force their parents to think as they do?
Jon Voight, however, the father of Angelina Jolie, has come to Jane’s defense. One of the few celebrities with enough acting clout to “come out” as a conservative in leftist Hollywood, Voight has voiced his support saying, “Good for her”. I wonder if Jolie, the head of the Ministry of Truth for the Voight family, will be “re-educating” her father.
As much as I hate the idea of blogging about a celebrity couple, I take solace in knowing that this story isn’t about them. It’s about the obvious double-standard the left enforces and a poor woman who has been scared into silence for doing what should come easily in a free society. These stories are becoming far too common and we need to do something about it. Make these stories a topic of conversation amongst your friends. Outline the ridiculousness of the “tolerance” of the left. Do not be afraid of cultural bullies that seek your agreement through intimidation.
