What was Benedict Arnold’s crime? Sure, every American has heard the name and rightfully associates his name with treachery, betrayal and treason. But many Americans are not able to recall his specific crime. He is a complicated character of American history as had it not been for his treason, his face may have ended up on money. Had the leg wound that rendered him hobbled for the remainder of his life killed him in the Battle of Saratoga, Benedict Arnold would be a name synonymous with bravery and devotion. But he committed a crime of treason, and was never trusted by any government again. His crime? When West Point was under his care, he purposefully drained its resources and gave maps to the British to facilitate its invasion.
Why is this tidbit of history relevant? The Obama administration has decided, in conjunction with the de facto amnesty granted to illegals last month, to close nine border patrol stations; thus doing everything short of installing a neon sign at the border saying, “Vacancy”.
Let’s be fair to the Obama administration, it’s not like they’re giving up West Point; they’re just weakening the ability to enforce border security while simultaneously declaring that those that are caught will likely never be deported. Benedict Arnold hid for the rest of his life in Great Britain, in disgrace and distrusted by everyone. Obama is running for re-election.
The nine stations, scattered around 4 states, are essential to immigration enforcement. Two-thirds of the stations to be closed are in Texas, a state that has had trouble enforcing immigration policies in the past. The stations being closed are: Abilene, Texas, San Angelo, Texas, Riverside, California, Dallas, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, Lubbock, Texas, Amarillo, Texas, Billings, Montana and Twin Falls, Idaho.
While these stations are not on the border, they have proven to be essential to helping stop the flow north of illegal immigrants through popular corridors. As in the case of the Amarillo station, the I-40 corridor is heavily trafficked by illegals moving northward. In regard to the closures, Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas stated,
“It could impact us tremendously since we’ve only got two agents up here now for 26 counties… I can’t hold a carload of people out there on I-40 for eight hours while somebody comes from El Paso. I mean, that’s just crazy.”
But others, bureaucrats who do not have to live in the areas that are adversely affected by their decisions, claim that this is actually in keeping with the goals of our immigration policy… Now that, I believe…
U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Bill Brooks wrote,
“These deactivations are consistent with the strategic goal of securing America’s borders, and our objective of increasing and sustaining the certainty of arrest of those trying to enter our country illegally. By redeploying and reallocating resources at or near the border, CBP will maximize the effectiveness of its enforcement mandate and align our investments with our mission.”
But the problem is that these border patrol stations are effective in catching criminals. The Amarillo and Lubbock stations alone have apprehended 638 illegals just this year. By shutting down the stations, we are sending a message to those that come here illegally: if you can get passed the border towns, you’re in the clear.
But the most startling aspect of this closure of stations is that it is just one more blow the Obama administration has dealt to those that wish to fight illegal immigration. This administration has circumvented Congress to grant amnesty to nearly all illegals, barred states from enacting their own measures to enforce illegal immigration laws, and fueled violence on both sides of the border by equipping Mexican cartels with thousands of firearms, some of which were used against our own border agents and killed Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.
It has also sought to weaken the effectiveness of the Border Patrol through several measures. The Department of Homeland Security is now urging the Border Patrol, that if they encounter someone shooting at them, to “run away” and “hide”. It has also been revealed that Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was shooting non-lethal bean-bag rounds at cartel gunmen equipped with AK47s they had procured through Operation Fast and Furious. Terry was following the ridiculous policy to shoot non-lethal warning shots before using live ammunition. And as we know, it did not work out too well for him.
When we combine this weakening of the Border Patrol with the federal blocking of state-enacted voter I.D. laws, it paints a clear picture of what the Obama administration’s message to illegals is: “If you can make it across the border, you’re home free. And while you’re here, remember to vote Democrat.”
Benedict Arnold purposefully left West Point vulnerable to invasion, and he is, rightfully, reviled for it. Here we are, 232 years later, and another “leader” is doing all he can to leave us vulnerable to invasion. We should all remember that when it comes time to decide whether we want him to keep his command.
