The Real State Of The Union

Like many Americans, I took an hour out of my busy life last night to listen to the President’s State Of The Union address. And like many Americans, it made me so angry I couldn’t even immediately respond. It would have been bad enough if Barack Obama had simply skipped over the real problems with this country and proposed doubling down on his vision of a European-style welfare state. But the fact that he insisted upon dressing up his radical vision in the rhetoric of moderation, even going so far as to invoke the troops in his calls for collectivism, made me literally sick to my stomach.

Luckily I know that most Americans were not taken in by this sham. Politico reports that Obama’s speech registered at an eight-grade level, according to the University of Minnesota, making it literally one of the three dumbest State Of The Union addresses since 1934. And between posing as a moderate and wrapping himself in the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform, the truth was clear: this was not the speech of a leader of the free world, but a campaign speech by an unabashed socialist.

Obama framed his speech in terms of “fairness,” but the truth now is the same as it was when Joe The Plumber confronted then-candidate Obama back in 2008. When examined with a clear eye, it is clear Obama’s policies come from his desire to “spread the wealth around.” Yesterday’s speech confirmed this, as the president spoke of taxing “millionaires and billionaires” and yet proposed new taxes that would hit everyone who owns stock. As Speaker Gingrich put it today

“I’m not sure the President actually understood, but if he actually meant what he said, it would be a disaster of the first order. It would double the capital gains tax. Doubling the capital gains tax would lead to a dramatic decline in the stock market, which would affect every pension fund in the United States, it would affect every person who has a 401K, it would affect the creation of jobs, it would drive capital out of the United States, it would in fact force people to invest overseas and it would be the most anti-jobs single step he could take.”

With almost no talk of the ballooning national debt and no serious discussion of proposed spending cuts, the message couldn’t have been more clear: if Barack Obama intends to do anything at all about our government’s fiscal nightmare (which is doubtful), it will come in the form of job-killing tax hikes, not reform of out-of-control spending. Why? Because class warfare, not restoring America’s economy, is his priority.

For more evidence of this, we have only to look at the president’s energy policy. Having just killed the Keystone XL pipeline which would have improved our energy independence and added tens of thousands of jobs to our economy, Obama had the nerve to defend his failed investments for cronies in “green” companies like Solyndra. No wonder evidence has surfaced that Warren Buffett, the President’s hypocritical, class-warrior, billionaire buddy was the major beneficiary of Obama’s Keystone XL decision. On energy, like on fiscal policy, this president is selling out the American people, killing jobs, protecting his friends and corrupting the market. And to think that he’s doing it all under the watchword of “fairness”!

I could go on an on about how wrong this year’s State Of The Union was, but the evidence is there for all to see. Besides, I agree with the President on one point: our union is getting stronger. I see it every day, in the faces of proud patriots I talk to, and in the rhetoric of the leaders who are fighting against Obama’s march to socialism. Over the past several years, this nation has awoken to the dangers it faces, to the profound challenges to our greatness that besiege us from within and without, and the American people are fighting back.

The rising strength of this great land comes not from any government handout or redistribution of wealth, but from our resolve to reject the intrusion of big government in our lives. It comes from our renewed faith in the free market, our hard work, and our belief in God. Because the American people are resolved to make yesterday’s speech the last State Of The Union by President Obama, the state of our union is indeed getting stronger.
